Each year, the final game of the regular season has a little more meaning for Virginia Tech. It's rivalry week and this year, Virginia travels to take on the Hokies Saturday.
But in what's been a down season for both teams, this has more meaning for Virginia Tech, especially. That's not counting the Hokies' eight straight wins in the series.
"Well, it means whether we go to a bowl game or not," coach Frank Beamer said. "Whether it impacts recruiting a lot, I don't know. Basically, I think kids grow up in this state and they either grow up a Virginia guy or grow up a Virginia Tech guy, for the most part. I mean, there's a few exceptions to that. I think people choose a program, not particularly on one game, but a season or seasons and the overall history. I think that's more it. I will say this, I believe there's two programs in the state that do it the right way and compete very hard."
Before picking up its first road win of the season at Boston College Saturday, Virginia Tech had lost five of six games. The win puts the Hokies back in contention to get to 6-6 overall and be bowl eligible for the 20th straight season.
