Aundre Dean putting in the work
All of UCLA's running backs gave a tremendous effort this spring session. There hasn't been any hanging of heads just hard work and great competition. Aundre Dean has gotten better as spring has progressed and his performance will make things tough on the Bruin coaches as they start to think about the depth chart.
Dean spent some time with BruinBlitz.com and talked about his spring performance and the competition at running back.
BruinBlitz.com: You are currently embroiled in an intense battle for the running back position this spring with a lot of talented backs, how do you feel you're measuring up so far?
Dean: "I feel like I'm running hard. That's all I can say. I can't speak for anyone else on what they are doing, but I know I am running hard out here every day doing what I have to do. We are all trying to earn a spot. I think honestly it is making our offense running game is a lot better because the competition is there and the coaches see it too. So that is good. We just have to keep coming out every day and be consistent. That's the big thing for a back to be able to do it and do it and do it. So that's what you have to strive for until you meet the their (coaches) expectations."
BruinBlitz.com: You seem to be getting quicker is that because you are getting a better understanding for the offense?
Dean: "Yeah, the more you get out there, the better you feel. I'm starting to know the offense, I know all my reads and I know what I am looking at so I don't have to think, I can just play. I'm also doing some foot drills and stuff like that on the weekends just trying to get my feet right because I feel that's where a lot of the other backs had me. They had a step on me, to be honest, like one step quicker than me.
"It is too tight out here to have that so I have been working a little bit on the weekends on my feet, just doing cone drills and TA, Terrence Austin has been helping me with some stuff to do and he has real good feet. We're going to work again in the summer and stuff like that.
"I'm just trying to work hard and I have the offense down so I am just playing and having some fun with it.
